What is the Class 5 Road Test in Burnaby?

Getting your Class 5 driver’s license is a big achievement—it means you’re finally ready to enjoy the full freedom of driving in British Columbia without the restrictions of the Class 7 (N) license. The Class 5 road test is the final exam to prove that you can drive safely, confidently, and independently on the road.

To be eligible, you must have held your Class 7 (N) license for at least 2 years, or 18 months if you completed an ICBC-approved driver training course. Once you’re eligible, you can book your test at any ICBC location—including the Burnaby ICBC driver licensing office, which is one of the most popular road test centers in the Lower Mainland.

What Will You Be Tested On?

During the test, the examiner will check how safely and smoothly you drive. They will watch for:

  • How well you change lanes, turn, and merge into traffic

  • If you follow speed limits and traffic signs

  • How you handle parking (parallel and reverse)

  • If you check your mirrors and blind spots often

  • How alert and aware you are of other vehicles, pedestrians, and cyclists.

What You Should Remember?

  • Always do shoulder checks before changing lanes or turning.

  • Stop fully at all stop signs.

  • Stay calm and focused during the test.

  • Don’t rush—drive smooth and steady.

  • Practice in the Burnaby test area before your actual test day.

What to Bring:

  • Your Class 7 N license

  • Test appointment confirmation

  • A car that is safe and working properly

  • Glasses or contacts (if you need them to drive)

What to Expect During the Class 5 Road Test?

The road test takes about 45 to 60 minutes and is conducted on real city streets, not in a parking lot or closed test area. You’ll be driving through residential areas, main roads, and intersections, and will need to show the examiner that you’re fully prepared to handle all kinds of driving situations safely.

During the test, an ICBC examiner will sit beside you and quietly give directions, such as “Turn left at the next intersection” or “Change lanes when safe.” While you drive, they will closely watch your skills and habits to make sure you meet BC’s road safety standards.

Tips to Help You Pass:

  • Take a practice lesson with a driving instructor in Burnaby—many schools offer mock road tests based on ICBC routes.

  • Drive the test area a few times before your exam to get comfortable.

  • Review your basic driving skills, especially parking and speed control.

  • Stay calm, breathe, and don’t rush—the examiner is watching how safe you are, not how fast you finish.

OUR HAPPY CUSTOMER

What is the Class 7 Road Test in Burnaby?

Getting your Class 7 license is the first big step to becoming a fully licensed driver in British Columbia (BC).

It is part of BC’s Graduated Licensing Program (GLP).
This program helps new drivers learn to drive safely and slowly — step by step — before they get their Class 5 (full license).

The Class 7 stage has two levels:

  1. Class 7L (Learner) – You are just starting to drive and must always have a supervisor with you.

  2. Class 7N (Novice) – You can drive alone, but still have some rules and restrictions to follow.

1. Class 7L – Learner License

Who Can Get It?

  • You must be at least 16 years old.

  • If you are under 19, your parent or guardian must sign a consent form.

  • You must pass:

    • A vision test.

    • A knowledge test (multiple-choice questions about road signs and driving rules).

💡 Tip: Study the ICBC “Learn to Drive Smart” book before your test — it has all the answers you need.

Rules for Learners (L):

Once you get your Learner’s license:

  • “L” sign must be on the back of your car when you drive.

  • A supervisor must be in the passenger seat:

    • Must be 25 years or older.

    • Must have a valid full driver’s license for at least 4 years.

  • You can only have 1 passenger besides your supervisor (unless they are your immediate family).

  • No alcohol or drugs in your body while driving.

  • No phone use — even hands-free devices are not allowed.

  • Must follow speed limits and drive according to road conditions.

How Long You Keep Your L:

  • You must keep your L for at least 12 months before you can take the road test.

  • This can be reduced to 8 months if you complete an ICBC-approved driving course.

What to Practice as a Learner:

  • How to start, stop, and steer smoothly.

  • Parking (parallel, reverse, and hill parking).

  • Shoulder checks and using mirrors.

  • Driving in different conditions (rain, night, busy roads, quiet streets).

2. Class 7N – Novice License

Once you’ve had your L for the required time, you can take the Class 7 road test.

Class 7 Road Test – What Happens:

  • Time: About 45 minutes.

  • Where: On real city streets, highways, and intersections.

  • Examiner: Sits beside you, gives instructions like “turn left at the next intersection,” and watches your driving.

They will check:

  • Lane changes and merging into traffic.

  • Obeying speed limits and traffic signs.

  • Parking skills.

  • Shoulder checks and mirror use.

  • How you handle intersections, pedestrians, and cyclists.

Rules for Novice (N):

  • “N” sign must be on the back of your car.

  • You can only have 1 passenger (unless with a supervisor aged 25+ or immediate family).

  • No alcohol or drugs when driving.

  • No phone use — even hands-free.

  • Must follow speed limits at all times.

How Long You Keep Your N:

  • You must keep your N for at least 24 months before taking the Class 5 road test.

  • This can be reduced to 18 months with an ICBC-approved driving course.

What to Bring to Your Road Test

  • Your current license (L).

  • Test appointment confirmation (paper or digital).

  • A safe, working car — all lights, brakes, and signals must work.

  • Glasses or contacts if you need them for driving.

Easy Tips to Pass the Road Test

  • Practice in the same area where you’ll take the test.

  • Always shoulder check before changing lanes or turning.

  • Stop completely at stop signs.

  • Keep both hands on the wheel and drive smoothly.

  • Don’t rush — examiners want safe driving, not fast driving.

  • Take a mock test with a driving instructor.

Do’s and Don’ts

✅ Do:

  • Keep your L or N sign clean and visible.

  • Drive often to gain experience.

  • Practice in all weather and traffic conditions.

  • Keep a safe distance from the car in front of you.

❌ Don’t:

  • Use your phone while driving (even at a red light).

  • Drive after drinking alcohol or using drugs.

  • Forget to signal or shoulder check.

  • Break the passenger rules.

Our Recommendation

The Class 7 stage is not just about passing tests — it’s about becoming a safe and confident driver.

  • Drive as much as possible in different situations.

  • Learn from experienced drivers.

  • Use your time as a Learner and Novice to practice safe habits.

When you’re ready for your Class 5, you’ll feel confident and prepared to drive anywhere.

Ish is a very thorough and well informed instructor. When it comes to teaching, he doesn’t overwhelm you with a lot of information all at once (because this can stress the learner out easily). He fills you with confidence and provides timely reassurance. I highly recommend his driving school for both N and Class 5 drivers. Cheers and thanks again!
